Ramshorn snails (scientific name: Planispira spp., often collectively referred to by the common name “ramshorn”), belong to the family Planorbidae. These freshwater snails are famous for their compact, coiled shells that resemble a ram’s horn—hence the name. They are typically 0.5 to 2 inches (1.3–5 cm) in length, with shells that appear in a range of colors, including brown, red, black, and even turquoise, depending on their diet and genetics.
